Biography of Alec Douglas-Home, Prime Minister by D.R. Thorpe
Lord Home's career spanned the years from the Great War to the Cold War, and his death in October 1995 closed a distinctive chapter in British political life. As well as Prime Minister, his posts included Scottish Minister, Commonwealth Secretary and, for almost seven years, Foreign Secretary. From his meetings with Hitler and Mussolini to his post-war dealings with Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Khrushchev and Gromyko, there were few world leaders whose paths he did not cross.
Among the many events freshly examined, based on exclusive access to the private papers at the Hirsel, are Munich, Suez, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Rhodesian rebellion, and the Tory leadership struggles over twenty years.
`An admirable biography ... Mr Thorpe has been meticulous in research and scrupulous in the objectivity of his judgement'
Patrick Cosgrave, Independent
`This is in many ways a model political biography ... its author deserves to be congratulated'
Anthony Howard, Sunday Times
`A valuable book about a very valuable man ... Thorpe's account of how Home so unexpectedly came to be leader of the party, and hence Prime Minister, is the best I have read'
Kenneth Harris, Glasgow Herald
`Superbly accurate and perceptive'
Tam Dalyell, Scotland on Sunday
`Excellent ...This balanced and sensitive biography does Home full justice'
Robert Blake, Evening Standard
